Windows Live Local, Australia

Windows Live Local has arrived in Australia. You can now navigate all around the world, with detailed imagery, mapping and places of interest in Australia.

If you are planning to see the cricket in Adelaide, you could use Windows Live Local for the following:

- find a hotel

- find a Thai restaurant

- get directions from Adelaide to Glenelg

- plan after-match drinks with your friends in Windows Live Messenger

Some basics

The navigation widget allows you to zoom in and out, scroll around the map and switch between road and aerial view:

Use the mouse and keyboard to move around
Live Local support click-and-drag type navigation to move around. You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out. You can also use the arrow keys to move around.

Spyk property search

Have a look at www.spyk.com - an amazing new website dedicated to finding that dream home. It's powered by the "Virtual Earth" mapping engine and is by far my favourite real estate site, even in its early development stage. The simplicity of the product is what I think makes it a standout.

Gone is the ad-clutter and noise of the more popular real estate websites, and in is the super-simple map-based property search.

I am really looking forward to how this product will evolve over the next few months. An excellent example of how Virtual Earth can be used to power map-based web services. Well done Spyk team!

Creating areas on Live Local maps

You can now create, save and share areas on a map.

Here's how:

1. Click on the "Collections" link so your scratchpad is visible.

2. At the bottom on the scratpad, click on the "mark an area" tool:

3. Start defining your area by clicking on the map:

4. Double-click on the final pin to finish and save:

5. You can create many areas, lines and pushpins and add them to your collections. When you are done, click on the "save" link in your scratchpad:

6. Give your collection a name and add notes as required. If you want to share your collection with friends, dont forget to tick the "public" box.

7. Share your collection!

Tips:

Moving "nodes" - click on the area, then mouse over the node you want to move. Click on it and drag it to the desired position.

Deleting "nodes" - right-click on the node you wish to delete.
